Mission

The Literacy Committee aims to promote the importance of good literacy skills for all ages, provide education and information about literacy development, and offer support to existing literacy programs (CASP, Laubach, Talk With Me).

Literacy Committee Programs

  • Family’s Day Out: literacy activities to supplement monthly themed events for families (Farm Field Day, Eco-Arts Day, Celebrate Family Meals, Bring Books to Life, Winterfest Playdate)
  • Family Literacy Day, January 27th: celebrated annually to encourage families to enjoy literacy activities with each other.
  • Parent Child Mother Goose®: sessions for parents, caregivers and children to come learn and enjoy the oral tradition of singing songs, saying rhymes and telling stories.
  • Storysacks Project: development of Storysacks for community members to learn about making and using within their community.

Literacy Resources in the Community

The Tantramar Adult Learning Center

  • The Tantramar Adult Learning Center provides an upgrading program in basic and intermediate English and mathematics as well as providing GED preparation for adults (ages 19+) of Sackville, Dorchester and the surrounding communities.
  • During the 2008–2009 academic year, classes are held:
    • Monday through Friday mornings from 8:30 to 12:30
    • Monday and Thursday evenings from 7 to 10
    • Tuesday afternoons from 2 to 4.
  • Each student has an individualized program. We try to be as flexible as possible to work around students' schedules.

Laubach Literacy

Laubach Literacy is an organization dedicated to teach adults to read on a one-to-one basis. A trained tutor provides instruction. If you or someone you know would be interested in learning to read or in upgrading basic reading skills, please call Cynthia Adams at 536-0245 for more information.

What is Literacy?

Literacy is the ability to use language to read, write, listen, and speak.

Forms of Literacy

  • Numeracy is the ability to understand and use numbers and other mathematical concepts.
  • Media literacy is the ability to access, evaluate and create messages in many types of media: tv, internet, mobile communication, radio.
  • Health literacy is the ability to read, understand and use healthcare information to make decisions and follow instructions for treatment.
  • Cultural literacy is the ability to converse using the idioms, figures of speech, and slang of a particular culture.
